Although monthly themes are subject to change based on student-led interests and passions, they will follow the general outline above. Alongside learning the “standard subjects” the goal for the third grade classroom is to build a fun and love driven environment to prepare ourselves to be mindful and equitable members of our community.
As long as the weather allows, we plan to spend at least part of every class day outdoors. Whether we’re making messy crafts or scientific explosions, whether we’re observing the birds, or whether we’re reading together under the shade of a tree, there are great benefits to outdoor learning and finding time to move our bodies.
An example of how a day might look in our classroom (Theme – We Are Changemakers):
We start our morning by reading a book about diversity and skin color. Students create a self-portrait using a variety of options (3D trash art sculpture, paper and pencil, collage, etc.) and include a small written story about themselves.
We learn about Celia Cruz, an Afro-Latina Cuban singer, and listen to her music. Students can dance, sing, or sit quietly while her music plays.
Outdoors time! Students gather objects they find in nature and create their own musical instrument. We get our bodies moving by playing a few team building games. Before heading back inside we put on a performance with our nature instruments!
We wrap up our day by studying the science of music and sound. Have you ever seen rice jump due to sound vibrations? We will!
